Otto de Vries is veilig aangekomen in Nederland!
Migranten, vrienden van de Filippijnse bevolking en bondgenoten in Nederland en Europa heetten de echte vriend van het Filippijnse volk met een welkomstbericht hartelijk welkom. Het pluimage aan organisaties is gericht op ontwikkelingswerk, mensenrechten, vrede & gerechtigheid, solidair met de Filippijnen, kerkelijk werk, en belangenorganisaties gericht op de migranten, vrouwen en jongeren.
De ongelukkige omstandigheid waarin Otto de Vries zich bevindt, bevestigt wat organisaties voor de mensenrechten zeggen over de Filippijnen: dat de regering-Duterte diegenen die de armen, de onderdrukten en de gemarginaliseerden dienen, valselijk beschuldigt van banden met het communisme en ze terroristen noemt. Of je nu een Filippino bent of een buitenlander.
Otto de Vries deed 30 jaar pastoraal werk in de Filippijnen. Hij leefde de Kerk van de armen. Zijn leven met de arbeiders was de bron van zijn motivatie. Jarenlang was Otto zelf arbeider en ondervond de hardheid van het bestaan. Toen hij geen lichamelijk werk meer kon uitvoeren is hij zich gaan inzetten voor het Oecumenisch Instituut voor Arbeidseducatie en Onderzoek (EILER).

“Ieder hoopt van harte dat de dag snel zal komen waarop er een regering komt dat het mogelijk zal zijn om terug te keren naar de Filippijnen om daar herenigd te worden met al je vrienden en je werk voort te zetten in solidariteit met de arme gemeenschappen die je zo lang hebt gediend.”
“Hoe het kwaad je kan treffen terwijl je in alle eenvoud eerlijk en oprecht wilde zijn. Blijf vertrouwen op je missie van Vrede en Gerechtigheid. Je weet niet wat de toekomst je nog brengen zal maar blijf geloven in het goede want dan zal dat je bestemming worden.”
In de tussentijd kan Otto er zeker van zijn dat Filippijnse migranten en Europese vrienden van de Filippijnse bevolking hem zullen steunen, die hem gaan ontmoeten zodra de pandemie beperkingen zijn versoepeld. Iedereen kijkt ernaar uit om te leren van zijn ervaringen en samen de strijd aan te gaan tegen onrecht en armoede.
“Landgenoot Otto, als erkenning voor je toewijding in het dienen van de Filippijnse arbeiders, verlenen wij je het erelidmaatschap van MIGRANTE NL. Zelfs als de Filippijnse regering je als een "ongewenste vreemdeling" beschouwt, bezit je voor ons alle kwalificaties van een Filippijnse landgenoot die de mensen lief heeft en dient.”

Otto de Vries has arrived safely in the Netherlands!
Migrants, friends of the Filipino community and allies in the Netherlands and Europe warmly welcomed a real friend of the Filipino people with their messages of solidarity. The list includes organizations involved in development work, human rights, peace & justice, solidarity with the Philippines, church work, and interest groups working with migrants, women and young people.
The case of Otto de Vries confirms what human rights organizations say about the Philippines: that the Duterte government falsely accuses those who serve the poor, the oppressed and the marginalized as communists and calls them terrorists. Whether you are a Filipino or a foreigner.
Otto de Vries was a pastoral worker in the Philippines for 30 years. He lived the Church of the poor. His life with the workers was the source of his motivation. For years, Otto became a worker himself and experienced the harshness of a worker’s life in the Philippines. When he was no longer able to do physical work, he started working for the Ecumenical Institute for Labor Education and Research (EILER).

In the meantime, Otto can rest assured that Filipino migrants and European friends of the Filipino people will support him. They will meet with him once the pandemic restrictions are relaxed as everyone looks forward to learning from his experiences and together, fight against injustice and poverty.

Even if the Philippine government considers you an "undesirable alien," for us, you possess all the qualifications of a Filipino compatriot who loves and serves the people.”
